Managing
Information Technology in smaller enterprises
by Ray Smith |
| Summary |
This book throws a lifeline
to the many managers and other non-specialist staff who, often
reluctantly, find themselves responsible for the computing service
in their organisation and possibly ill-qualified to deal with
the challenges it raises. The book is also a compact resource
for anyone who needs an overview of good-practice in business
IT without wading through more academic literature.
It offers a non-technical overview of how
computers work, what you can expect them to achieve, and what
questions to ask of the IT professionals you will almost certainly
encounter in the course of your work. There is practical advice
on how to improve the productivity, reliability and security
of your computer systems and how to assess whether you are
making an appropriate level of investment when upgrading or
replacing equipment. It provides an explanation of currently
available products and technologies that you might choose
to explore further and will leave you with some insights into
IT trends in a business context and the way they may impact
your organisation in the future. The author has included a
series of short case studies, based on his own experience
in the industry and the text is linked to an invaluable technical
glossary that unpacks over 200 perplexing terms and acronyms
that make the whole subject so intimidating to the non-specialist.
Finally the book aims to provide an entertaining, thought-provoking
and not too respectful view of one of the most astonishing
commercial and social revolutions of our era.
